Little dogs, big city

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Elizabeth and I had weddings on back-to-back weekends in New York so we decided to make a 10 day trip out of it and spend some time in the City and some time at the beach house in Wainscott. Since we would be gone for a while, we decided to take the boys. Charlie has done the cross-country trip many times, but this would be Gus’s first trip on an airplane. Since they’re both little guys, they get to ride on the plane underneath the seats in front of us. But first, they had to go through security.

No, they don’t actually go through the x-ray machine, but this was a handy place for them to stay while we got the rest of our stuff out of the machine. They were both really good on the plane. We did cheat and give Gus a mild sedative…

Once in the City, Charlie showed Gus around some of the typical NYC sights like fire hydrants, food carts, and a Village Voice stand.

Charlie tried teaching Gus that little dogs shouldn’t walk on the sidewalk grates. Gus did make the mistake once and nearly fell through, but learned his lesson after that!

Gus was very interested in chasing the pigeons.

Some nice firemen in Greenwich Village let them check out an actual FDNY firetruck.

Charlie got to make a stop back by his old favorite day care at Wet Nose Doggy Gym. It took Charlie a minute to remember where he was, but then he was super excited to see his old friends.

They waited to take a taxi after a long day of walking and shopping.

(and couldn’t get picked up, so got hidden in a shopping bag until the taxi stopped and we were in!)

Then finally got to relax and take a well-deserved nap in the hotel bed.

Elizabeth and I definitely had fun getting back to the City and being tourists in our old hometown. I think Charlie and Gus had a good time there as well!

Family road trip, but now I gotta go

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Yesterday we had a nice family road trip to San Diego to drop my bike off at a friend’s house and then to meet my parents for lunch. We ate at Swami’s on the PCH in Encinitas, which I highly recommend if you’re around that way. Thankfully Charlie is a great traveler and loves the car. He alternated between the ground at Elizabeth’s feet, her lap and a cozy place on the console between me and Elizabeth.

It was a great family day.

But now… unfortunately, I’m packing up for a week away from my two favorites. After months and months and months of training and preparation, I’m headed up to Penticton, BC, Canada for Ironman Canada. The race is next Sunday (Aug. 30), but I’m headed up early to get the lay of the land and get organized and settled and relaxed before the race.

Hopefully I’ll post some stories about Charlie from up there to help ease being away!

Another wonderful travel day

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Vacation was fun, especially since we did get a couple days of sun out there, but it was finally time to come home. Since we were coming from the eastern end of Long Island, our travel day started early, early early. I mean leaving the house at 5:30am early. It was a car ride to JFK, then the AirTrain to the terminal:

Dogs are absolutely not allowed out of their cases while on the airplane. No way. Most of the time, the flight attendants don’t even like the case to come out from under the seat. This morning though, Charlie got lucky and spent a good chunk of the flight asleep on my lap, hiding underneath my sweatshirt. If the flight attendants saw, they pretended not to! (Big props to the Virgin America crew from this morning’s flight – they were an awesome group. The pilots actually let us take a picture in the cockpit before take off! And the flight attendants were super cool.) Charlie was a good traveler today and quietly slept nearly the entire time. The photo’s dark, but if you look closely, you can see a little black nose poking out:

Because we don’t travel so lightly – luggage, laptops, snacks, a bike, Charlie – Charlie got to ride on the luggage cart once we got to LAX:

And now we’re back home! Phew. It was a great trip, but we’re all exhausted. When we got home, Charlie took me on a good walk around the neighborhood and now it’s time for him to take another nap. Me, well, I’m back at it – “it” being reality. My job search beckons.
