The “Pack”

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

While Loren and (person) Charlie are out of town for a few days, the boys get a special treat in the form of another sleepover with Birdie. They fell right into their usual rhythm together, with Gus and Birdie playing and wrestling and “old man” Charlie splitting time between the sidelines and playing field.

So far, the most fun we’ve had was running around in the backyard. The dogs were feeling particularly photogenic, so I got some good pictures. Gus is particularly curious about the camera.

If I don’t take the picture quickly, he’s right up in the lens.

Charlie, on the other hand, mostly couldn’t care less. In fact, I often think that he purposefully avoids looking at the camera.

Sometimes the dogs would even fetch the mini tennis ball I was throwing to them.

Trial Separation

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

It looks like the “Year of Charlie and Josh” is just about coming to an end. I actually have a full-time job lined up starting in January. That’s good news (mostly), especially since it means I can afford to keep feeding Charlie all the Happy Hips chicken jerky treats he loves to eat. On the other hand, it does mean that we won’t be spending nearly every waking hour together any more. Gone will be the mid-day trips to the dog park. Gone will be the afternoons lazing in the sun together.

But it’s not time for me to get all nostalgic just yet. It just comes to mind today because I’m spending this week working essentially full-time in the office where I’ll be come January. So, Charlie and I are doing a little trial separation. We’re each getting used to not being together all day. I wonder who it’s tougher on? Probably me, since the little sh*t will just sleep the day away.

A small consolation (for me at least) is that I will get welcomed home like this again on a regular basis. At least once he gets over being pissed off at me for abandoning him…

Dirty Dog, Clean Dog

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Charlie decided to roll around in the mud at the dog park today. He got himself filthy.

He wasn’t that clean to begin with, so it was the perfect time for a bath. He doesn’t love the bath, but he doesn’t hate it either – maybe we don’t wash him enough for him to remember to run when he hears the water start running! We take him to get professionally groomed every six-or-so weeks, but getting the mud off him today was an emergency situation, one I would handle myself. Being unemployed, I don’t really have any excuse for not bathing him. It’s not like he can make it that difficult for me! (As I was washing him I started thinking that maybe I could become a dog washer/groomer. Then I realized there’s no way I have the patience to do this with anyone else’s dog.)

All lathered up, futilely plotting his escape from the tub:

Every time he gets a bath, once we’ve gotten him mostly towel dry, he does this thing where he shakes, runs around in circles and rolls around on something familiar – at our old place it used to be this ugly brown loveseat, today it was his devil pillow-bed. He does it frantically, and we always get a kick out of it:
